Guided Wave Studies of Reflective MTN Liquid Crystal Cell

چکیده
The fully-leaky guided wave technique has been used to study the reflective 90 ̊ MTN liquid crystal cell used for LCOS. The cell is comprised of upper substrate with indium-tin-oxide coating and lower substrate with aluminum coating. Reflective angle-dependent signals (Rss, Rpp, Rsp and Rps) were recorded over a range of angles of incidence with the cell under application of 0 7 Vrms ac electric fields. From the recorded experimental data, we found the reflective signals are quite strong, especially the polarization conversion signals. Fitting the data in reflection with the results of the modeling-program gives the information about the pre-tilt and twist of the director as well as the parameters of different optical layers. We found that the pre-tilt angle on the upper substrate is different from that on the bottom in the best fits, which suggests that the indium-tin-oxide and the aluminum coatings have different effects on the alignment layers.

Design and fabrication of reflective nematic displays with only one polarizer
Reflective LCDs (RLCDs) have high brightness and are free from viewing parallax. They also cost less materials to construct and are compatible with existing manufacturing and driving practices. In this paper, a parameter space description of RLCD as a function of polarizer angle, liquid crystal twist angle and birefringence is discussed. It is shown that all published RLCD modes can be depicted...

A wide-view single cell gap transflective liquid-crystal display (TR-LCD) using the fringe field switching effect is proposed by incorporating a quarter-wave in-cell-retarder below the liquid-crystal (LC) cell in the reflective part. By optimizing the angle between the electrode stripes and the LC rubbing direction in the transmissive and the reflective regions, this TR-LCD exhibits a high opti...

Cell gap thickness is one of the most important design parameters for liquid crystal displays ~LCD!. Existing measurement methods only apply to transmittive LC cells. These methods are obviously unsuitable for measuring the cell gaps of reflective LCDs with internal reflectors. This kind of LCD includes single polarizer reflective displays and liquid crystal on silicon displays. The objective o...

A phase compensation method is presented for measuring the cell gap of reflective LCD. We use the so-called QHQ compensator that is made up of two quarter-wave plates (Q) and one half-wave plate (H). This method is different from other compensation methods in that we can change both the orientation angle and retardation value of the compensator by rotating the quarterwave and halfwave retarders...
متن کاملOptimization of reflective bistable twisted nematic displays with retardation compensation
The contrast ratios of reflective bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal displays with a rear quarter-wave film are optimized by means of a parameter space approach. By plotting the contrast ratio as a function of the twist angle and thickness-birefringence product (dDn) of the display, the regions where the displays show the best contrast ratio are clearly shown. Both the absolute reflectance...
